What is a Class A Motorhome?
A motorhome is an RV with its own drive train. Essentially, this means that motorhomes do not require a tow vehicle to get from place to place, and can be driven around under their own power. Motorhomes are further divided into classes based on what type of frame they are built upon. In the case of the Class A, this would be a bus. Most Class A have a flat front and a panoramic windshield.
Size
Being built on a bus chassis, it is no surprise that Class A motorhomes are some of the biggest RVs on the market. The only other types that can compare are destination trailers and park models, which are so large that they are almost never moved and in some cases require a special vehicle to transport. Class A diesel motorhomes, or diesel pushers, can be especially large, although the average is closer to between 30 and 45 feet long. Many models also have slide outs to provide you and your family with even more room. This isn’t empty space either. Class As boast some of the most extensive features among RVs, allowing you to bring many of the comforts of home on the road with you.
Driving
If you do choose to go with a Class A, keep in mind that you will be driving a vehicle similar in size to a bus, and it will need to be operated as such. Class As have a higher center of gravity, making them easier to tip over if you are not careful. Class As also use air brakes rather than the hydraulic brakes common in lighter vehicles. Air brakes are sometimes better when it comes to maintenance, but they require more time to stop the vehicle. We highly recommend that you practice driving your Class A in a safe area before you take it on the road. The experience of driving one of these massive campers is so different from operating a passenger vehicle that you will essentially be a new driver.
